Keep Live Bait Healthy in Florida Heat

Oxygen, temperature, crowding, and clean water determine whether bait stays lively long enough to matter.

Oxygen Comes First

Use dependable aeration or circulating water and test the system before collecting bait. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, which makes summer crowding especially risky.

Do Not Overload the Well

The right number depends on species, bait size, tank volume, shape, flow, and temperature. Fewer healthy baits are more useful than a packed well full of weak ones.

Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

Large temperature shifts can shock bait. Shade the well when possible and avoid adding ice directly unless you understand how the bait species responds to temperature and salinity changes.

Handle Bait Gently

Wet hands, use a small bait net, minimize time out of water, and keep sunscreen or fuel off your hands before reaching into the well.
