Use Appropriate Tackle

Gear that is too light can create an unnecessarily long fight, especially in warm water or strong current. Use enough tackle to control and land the fish efficiently.

Prepare Before the Fish Arrives

Have pliers, dehooker, measuring tool, camera, and landing net ready. Searching for equipment while a fish lies on a hot deck wastes valuable time.

Support the Fish

Wet your hands, avoid dry surfaces, and support the body horizontally when a fish must be lifted. Never suspend a heavy fish only by the jaw unless accepted handling guidance for that species specifically allows it.

Revive in Clean Moving Water

Keep the fish upright and allow water to move through the gills. Release it when it can maintain balance and swim away under its own power.
