Topsail Hill Preserve State Park fishing starts with the route to the water. The park offers a long Gulf shoreline and inland lake habitat, but current access work can change how you reach the beach. Check notices before packing a cart or planning around a familiar boardwalk.
The beach route has a current change
The park's September 16, 2026 notice says the main beach boardwalk is closed and directs visitors to a designated path beside the tram station. Follow the marked route and staff instructions. Do not improvise a shortcut across the dunes.
The listed day-use hours are 8 a.m. to sunset, with the entrance at 7525 West County Highway 30A. Confirm the tram arrangements and what fishing equipment can be carried before assuming that a large cart will be convenient.
Pack for the journey as well as the surf
One rod, a small cooler, and a shoulder bag are easier to manage than several outfits. Bring enough drinking water for the walk and wait. A 9-foot surf rod with a 4000-size reel covers a basic bait session once you reach a permitted area.
Check swimming activity and signs before rigging. Use small shrimp baits in the near trough for whiting. Sand fleas or compact shrimp baits are sensible pompano options when the surf allows the rig to hold.
Fish to recognize before you cast
Two practical sandy-surf targets. Their presence varies with conditions and season.

Do not force a surf outfit into a lake trip
Campbell Lake is a separate freshwater setting within the park. Ask staff about current fishing access, permitted methods, and the relevant license requirements before including it in the outing. A lighter rod may suit that plan, but carrying two full systems can make the beach route harder.
Choose the main water in advance. If the Gulf is rough, a lake option is useful only when access and conditions there are also suitable.
Let the preserve remain the main attraction
Keep tackle off dune vegetation and use the designated route even when it takes longer. Take line scraps and bait packaging back with you. With current boardwalk work, a little patience on the approach is part of making this fishing trip work.
Allow time for the return route
Check the tram arrangements and the walk before starting a late session. A bite near the end of the day does not change the park's closing time. Pack the spare tackle first, then finish with one final safe retrieve. Keep enough time to secure hooks and carry the load back without rushing.
A starting tackle list for Topsail Hill Preserve State Park
These are starting ranges, not a shopping requirement. Reel sizes vary by maker. Match the rod, line, and total casting weight, and adjust to the conditions you can safely fish.
| Tackle | Starting choice |
|---|---|
| Surf rod and reel | 9-10 ft spinning rod; 4000-5000 reel |
| Main line | 15-20 lb mono, or 20 lb braid with a suitable leader |
| Leader or bait rig | 20-30 lb mono for small-bait surf fishing |
| Bait and hook | Small shrimp piece or sand flea; roughly size 2 to 1/0 hook, matched to bait |
| Sinker | Only enough to hold; remain within the rod rating including bait weight |
| Separate lake outfit | 6.5-7 ft medium rod; 2500 reel; 8-10 lb mono, subject to local methods and target fish |

Keep a measuring tool and pliers in the bag. Check current Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission license, season, size, and bag rules before keeping a catch. Access permission and a fishing license are separate requirements.
