Inlet Beach is a useful place to plan a Gulf fishing trip at the eastern end of 30A. Start with the public access system rather than assuming that the nearest resort boardwalk is available. The South Orange Street area is a practical landmark to check on South Walton's current beach access map.

Find the entrance before choosing a fishing spot

Public access does not mean parking is available on every nearby street. Read the current map, parking signs, and beach notices. Carry hooks secured while walking through the entrance, and leave room for carts, wheelchairs, and families.

Once on the sand, look for a permitted area clear of swimmers. This guide covers the Gulf beach. It does not treat the nearby coastal lake or an outfall as a permanently open inlet that you can always fish.

Work outward from the inside trough

Start with a small shrimp bait for whiting. Make a short cast, let the rig settle, and check whether the sinker holds. After giving that placement a fair try, cast a little farther. Keep track of which distance produces taps.

Pompano may take a small sand flea or shrimp when they are feeding along the beach. A neatly baited hook matters more than a large ball of bait. If small fish keep stripping shrimp, a durable bait strip can provide a backup within the same compact rig.

Fish to recognize before you cast

Two practical sandy-surf targets. Their presence varies with conditions and season.

A surf outfit that fits a walk-up trip

A 9- to 10-foot rod and a 4000-size spinning reel are a good starting combination. Use a line strength that suits the outfit and a sinker within its rating. Keep enough spare leader to replace a rough section after a snag or a fish with abrasive jaws.

Do not carry a full lure selection unless you intend to fish it. A small box with a few hooks, swivels, and sinkers is easier to control in blowing sand.

Consider Camp Helen as a separate outing

Camp Helen State Park lies nearby, but it has its own entrance, hours, and beach walk. It also includes Lake Powell, which calls for a different plan from open surf. Compare the two before leaving your lodging rather than switching at random after carrying a heavy load down to the beach.

Keep durable bait as a backup

If small fish remove shrimp faster than you can fish, try a small durable bait strip suitable for saltwater use. Keep the presentation compact and the hook point exposed. It is an adjustment to the same small-bait plan, not a reason to cover the hook with several different baits at once.

A starting tackle list for Inlet Beach

These are starting ranges, not a shopping requirement. Reel sizes vary by maker. Match the rod, line, and total casting weight, and adjust to the conditions you can safely fish.

Tackle Starting choice
Surf rod and reel 9-10 ft spinning rod; 4000-5000 reel
Main line 15-20 lb mono, or 20 lb braid with a suitable leader
Leader or bait rig 20-30 lb mono for small-bait surf fishing
Bait and hook Small shrimp piece or sand flea; roughly size 2 to 1/0 hook, matched to bait
Sinker Only enough to hold; remain within the rod rating including bait weight

Keep a measuring tool and pliers in the bag. Check current Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission license, season, size, and bag rules before keeping a catch. Access permission and a fishing license are separate requirements.
