James Willis and the backcountry

James was raised in Charlotte County and describes these waters as his home fishery. His shallow-water trips pursue snook, redfish and trout around mangroves and other backcountry habitat. James advertises a licensed and insured guide service.

Backcountry rates are listed at $500 for four hours or $700 for six, based on two anglers. The FAQ permits four anglers overall and describes a $100 charge above two. Confirm the guest surcharge for your particular package.

Tarpon and specialized fishing

Tarpon prices are $600 for four hours, $850 for six and $1,100 for eight, based on three anglers. A fourth angler is listed at an additional $100. These trips focus on the Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor area.

The menu also lists an eight-hour goliath grouper trip at $1,500 and shark fishing at $150 an hour with a six-hour minimum. A May-June trophy-shark option is listed at $200 an hour with an eight-hour minimum. Discuss current availability and release practices directly.

Equipment and departure locations

Necessary fishing equipment, license coverage, ice and water are supplied. Legal retained fish can be cleaned and bagged. Guests bring food, preferred drinks, sun protection and a camera, with glass bottles excluded.

Named pickup options are the public ramp at 6499 Gasparilla Road in Placida and Port Charlotte Beach Complex at 4500 Harbor Boulevard. James may arrange other waterfront pickups. The office address on Barstow Street should not be used as a boat launch.

Deposit and changing conditions

A $100 deposit is required. The policy describes refunds with 30 days' written notice or qualifying captain cancellations, including hazardous weather or vessel problems. Confirm the wording that applies to your reservation.

Contact James two days before the trip or on arrival in town. Pickup time and location may change to suit feeding conditions and weather. Ask for the assigned boat's seating, shade and passenger arrangement before finalizing a long outing.

Details checked October 9, 2026, using the operator’s published information. Rates, boats, meeting points and policies can change; confirm the final trip details directly. Listed species describe possible targets, not a guaranteed catch or an open harvest season.
