Captain Alex Miller

Miller grew up in St. Augustine, began his fishing career after school in 2006 and founded Drop Down in 2012. His biography lists a 100-ton Master captain license and a home base in Vilano Beach.

Two very different fishing platforms

The 39-foot Carolina Custom carries up to six guests. Its published equipment includes turbo-diesel power, an air-conditioned cabin and a bathroom. It is used for offshore fishing, bottom fishing, trolling and custom trips.

The 18-foot Mako 181 carries up to three guests. It has a 130-horsepower Yamaha, an iPilot trolling motor and Garmin electronics. This is the smaller-boat choice for flats, inshore and suitable nearshore outings.

Fish close to town or farther into the Atlantic

The inshore descriptions name redfish, flounder, jacks and trout. Nearshore trips may pursue tarpon, sharks, cobia and bull redfish. Offshore trips involve a different boat and a longer exposure to Atlantic conditions. Discuss the intended grounds with Alex before choosing.

Drop Down also advertises dolphin viewing, sightseeing, birdwatching and private celebrations. These can suit a group whose interests extend beyond holding a fishing rod all day.
