Fishing with Kevin Johnsen

Kevin describes himself as a lifelong Keys diver with roughly four decades of local experience. His credentials include a Master Captain license. His charter business operates from Captain Hooks Marina at mile marker 53 in Marathon.

The choice of trip matters more than the broad list of fish. A short reef outing leaves room for a family to try fishing without committing to an offshore run. A longer wreck or offshore reservation allows more travel and time at the grounds. Kevin can help match those options to the group's comfort.

The menu by length and activity

The operator lists four-hour reef and shark trips, six-hour reef and wreck fishing, and offshore outings of about six to seven hours. A fishing and snorkeling combination is listed at four hours. Standalone snorkeling can range from three to six hours.

Night snapper outings appear on the July and August menu. Lobster trips are listed for August through October and last about four to six hours. Those are the operator's advertised scheduling periods. Legal harvest dates and the actual availability of each trip still need to be checked for your visit.

Comfort and getting in the water

Mixed fishing and snorkeling days require guests to be comfortable swimming and climbing the boat ladder. Tell Kevin if anyone plans to remain aboard. Offshore conditions can also feel very different from a nearby reef, so discuss the route if someone is concerned about rough water.

The FAQ describes a marine head with restricted use, rather than a bathroom available to everyone on the same terms. Ask Kevin about privacy and access for your group before reserving. This is particularly useful when planning a longer outing with children or guests who need frequent bathroom access.

Packing and meeting at Captain Hooks

An iced cooler and drinks are described in the FAQ. Bring the additional food and personal supplies Kevin recommends for the exact package. Apply sunscreen before boarding and consider a sun shirt, hat, neck covering and polarized glasses. His packing rules exclude glass and several messy food and drink items, so check that list before filling your cooler.

Meet at the marina's fuel dock behind the main building, after confirming the day's instructions. Call or email with your preferred trip, date and number of guests. Obtain the current boat details, total price, deposit and weather policy directly. Those details are more reliable than assuming all activities share one price or booking rule.

Details checked October 10, 2026, using the operator’s published information. Rates, boats, meeting points and policies can change; confirm the final trip details directly. Listed species describe possible targets, not a guaranteed catch or an open harvest season.
