Shan Roper and the Contender
Shan began working at Sea Hag Marina as a dockhand and says he earned his captain's license at eighteen. His charter boat is a 36-foot Contender with three 350-horsepower Suzuki engines and Furuno electronics.
The advertised limit is six people, including children. The business welcomes families, but the length and distance of its offshore trips deserve careful consideration for young guests. Explain everyone's experience and ask which outing is the most suitable before committing to a long run.

Long-range snapper and grouper fishing
The twelve-hour red snapper trip is described as traveling roughly 80 to 120 miles offshore, with a 5 a.m. or 7 a.m. start. Red grouper and vermilion snapper may also be targeted when permitted. The twelve-hour gag grouper outing starts at 5 a.m., travels more than 100 miles and includes a stop for live bait.
A ten-hour Middle Grounds trip has a listed 6:30 a.m. departure. Its targets include red grouper, vermilion snapper, lane snapper and mangrove snapper. Ask Shan which species are open for retention on your dates and how weather may alter the plan.
Eight-hour alternatives
The eight-hour nearshore bottom-fishing menu starts at 7 a.m. and describes fishing in 40 to 60 feet of water. Mangrove snapper, hogfish, lane snapper, grunts and black sea bass appear on that target list.
A separate eight-hour sheepshead and hogfish trip also starts at 7 a.m. These outings avoid the very long distances described for the twelve-hour options, but they are still full days aboard an offshore fishing boat. The captain can explain the expected ride and methods.
What is included and how payment works
License coverage, bait and tackle are supplied. Water, ice and a cooler are provided, while guests bring their other drinks and food. The operator says it cleans and vacuum-seals the legal catch at the dock.
A $500 deposit is requested through a Square invoice. The balance is due on the charter day, with cash, check and card options described; card processing may add a fee. Some charters are priced plus fuel. Obtain a total or clear fuel estimate before agreeing to that arrangement.
Important rules before departure
The posted cancellation policy refunds a deposit with at least thirty days' notice. Inside that period, the operator describes rescheduling rather than an automatic refund. Ask separately how a captain's weather cancellation is handled.
The site also states that cellphones and electronics are not allowed aboard, and pets require prior discussion. Clarify those unusual equipment rules before packing. Call 904-699-1569 for prices, boarding instructions and a confirmed departure from Sea Hag Marina. Gratuity is not included in the charter fare.
Details checked October 11, 2026, using the operator’s published information. Rates, boats, meeting points and policies can change; confirm the final trip details directly. Listed species describe possible targets, not a guaranteed catch or an open harvest season.
