A captain who grew up fishing here

Scott’s family moved to St. Augustine in 1992, when he was twelve. He began exploring local canals and the Intracoastal Waterway in a small boat. His charter business emphasizes family trips as well as outings for friends and colleagues.

The website lists a Coast Guard license, first-aid and CPR training, fishing permits and commercial insurance. Although his captain credential allows more passengers, the advertised fishing-charter maximum is four. Use that smaller trip limit when planning your group.

Room and shade on the Southport

Southern Star has twin Yamaha 250-horsepower four-stroke engines and a 9-foot-6-inch beam. A large T-top provides shade, and there is a step-down toilet compartment with standing room. Beanbag seating and cushioned decking are among the stated comforts.

The boat uses a GPS-positioning trolling motor to hold at fishing spots. Radar, a life raft, a locator beacon and multiple radios are listed among its equipment. These facilities support offshore travel, but the captain still decides when conditions are suitable.

How the longer trips differ

An eight-hour trip is listed at $1,500 and typically fishes bottom areas about 20 to 40 miles offshore. Ten hours costs $1,700 and allows runs farther out, often around 40 to 50 miles. The twelve-hour option is $2,000 and can reach the offshore ledge when conditions permit.

Bottom fishing is the main method, with some seasonal trolling. Snapper, grouper, triggerfish, porgies and sea bass feature in the catch list. Tuna, mahi, kingfish and other roaming species may be possible on the right trip.

Included gear and practical packing

The quoted packages cover fuel, ice, bait, rods, reels, tackle, licenses and fish cleaning. Bring food and drinks. Keep a take-home cooler in the car, and avoid large hard coolers onboard because storage is limited.

The operator says uncomfortable rough conditions can lead to a reschedule or refund even when the sea is technically safe. Discuss that policy and any deposit terms with Scott. Request the marina location in the confirmation, and arrange any personal tackle before bringing several extra rods.

Details checked October 2, 2026, using the operator’s published information. Rates, boats, meeting points and policies can change; confirm the final trip details directly. Listed species describe possible targets, not a guaranteed catch or an open harvest season.
